Cherik Thoughts

I thoroughly believe those two men fell in love very fast. But I also believe neither of them did a singular thing about it.

It was the 60s. Being a mutant? Hard enough. Being Jewish AND a mutant? Even worse? BEING GAY AND A MUTANT? literally unthinkable. They have taken enough hits they ain’t putting themselves up on the chopping block ANOTHER WAY

these two gay men wanted separate things yes. Charles wanted to be a part of humans and Erik wanted mutants to be recognized as their own.

But both of these goals require them to be ‘model mutants’ in a way. Charles being gay would throw off everything, it’d make trying to bring people around to his ideology harder because there’s this wall of “he thinks being gay is right can we trust him on anything else?”. And Erik does not have the time or emotional wherewithal to deal with All That while he try’s to accomplish his goals.

plus! These men cannot feel an emotion normally to save their lives! See the raging Erik or the DOFP Charles, like omg coming out of the closet would disintegrate them! They could not handle the idea of disappointing the people around them or WORSE the confrontation of being in love with the guy Thats against you in every way.

it is a tragedy because it was never meant to be! These two men cannot get over themselves to get to eachother! They are both right in some ways and both wrong in some ways and both IN A RIVER IN EGYPT!

God, Magneto's Nazi manhunt is so fucking good.

This movie leans in hard on Magneto being a Holocaust victim. Previous movies had referenced it for poignancy with his charismatic speeches, but his plot in First Class is about the shadow of that genocide and its effects on him.

When we first meet Adult Xavier, he's using his rich boy education to flirt with women.

When we first meet Adult Magneto, he's on a bloody warpath.

He's got a conspiracy wall of targets and he's looking to put a little more iron in the blood of the Nazi who killed his mum.

And he has a sense of fucking poetry about it.

"This gold was torn from the teeth of my people," he says, moments before forcing Schmidt's banker to surrender his location by. Uh.

I love this about First Class's Magneto. He is such a scenery-chewing showman. Michael Fassbender had the unfortunate task of needing to follow Ian McKellen in this role, and these opening scenes are truly promising.

He's just.

He is so fucking smooth while positively glowing with impending retaliatory violence and I want to have his fucking babies oh my god. Magneto, you magnificent bastard, I'm so sorry that your solo film was cancelled because Barakapool sucked.

I actually wonder if Magneto's hunt for Schmidt in this film is actually the leftover remnant from the script for X-Men Origins: Magneto.
